International Auto Industry Saw Significant Growth in 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.Autos Drive America and the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) today released their 2022 Economic Impact Report, highlighting the ongoing commitment and contributions international automakers and nameplate dealers are making across the U.S. According to the report, international automakers and dealers increased U.S. investments, vehicle production, sales, and exports in 2021, which led to more career opportunities and community investments nationwide.

The report’s key findings from 2021 include:

  • International automakers, dealers, and suppliers supported 2.3 million American jobs, up from 2.1 million in 2020
  • International automakers accounted for 47% of all U.S. light vehicle production, up from 46% in 2020
  • The majority of new vehicles sold in 37 states and Washington, D.C. were made by international automakers, up from 27 states and Washington, D.C. in 2020
  • International automakers and dealers accounted for 59% of overall U.S. new vehicle sales and 66% of the U.S. green vehicle market, up from 55% and 62% respectively in 2020

“In 2021, international automakers saw significant increases in U.S. production, sales, and exports despite the ongoing challenges to the American automotive industry and the manufacturing sector at large,” said Jennifer Safavian, President and CEO of Autos Drive America. “Our members increased their U.S. investments to more than $100 billion, reinforcing their continued commitment to create American careers, revitalize and strengthen local communities, and drive the U.S. auto industry forward.”

According to the 2022 Economic Impact Report, international automakers have increased their U.S. production volume by more than 56% over the past 25 years, with their share of production growing from 1% in 1979 to 47% in 2021. International automakers have expanded operations to 31 manufacturing facilities in 12 states and 74 research and development facilities in 14 states, while international nameplate dealers operate nearly 9,400 dealer franchises across all 50 states.

International automakers are embracing the electric transition and leading green vehicle sales in the U.S., according to the latest data. International automakers accounted for nearly 1.1 million new green vehicles sold in 2021, accounting for 66% of the overall green vehicle market and offering 119 different green vehicle models.

“Today’s report details the impressive impact America’s international nameplate dealers have made across the country and the unwavering commitment our members have to the U.S. auto industry,” said Cody Lusk, AIADA President and CEO. “In 2021, international nameplate dealers sold 9 million new vehicles, making up 59% of U.S. market share, thanks in large part to the investments our brands are making in the U.S. Our members remain committed to the millions of customers they serve each year and the 543,000 Americans they provide with good, stable jobs in small towns and big cities nationwide.”

The annual Economic Impact Report aims to educate policymakers and the public on today’s U.S. auto industry and the growing economic footprint international automakers and dealers have across the country. The automobile manufacturers participating in the 2021 Autos Drive America and AIADA Economic Impact Survey were BMW Group, Honda, Hyundai, KIA, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen Group of America, and Volvo Cars. Sales data represents new vehicle registrations in the United States in 2021 for Acura, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Bugatti, Ferrari, Fiat, Honda, Hyundai, Genesis, Infiniti, Jaguar, KIA, Karma, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lexus, Lotus, Maserati, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo Cars.
