Budget Framework Excludes 673,000 Working Americans

Alexandria, Va. (October 28) – Cody Lusk, President & CEO of the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA), today released the following statement in response to the $1.75 trillion budget framework, which includes a discriminatory tax credit made only available to consumers who purchase vehicles built in union-represented plants.

“The inclusion of this $4,500 UAW-only tax credit is an insult to the 673,000 Americans who work in international nameplate manufacturing plants and dealerships. Far from ‘building back better,’ this provision makes it more difficult for Americans to buy green vehicles, as it can only be applied to a handful of the more than 60 electric vehicles available for sale today.

“Instead of bringing Americans together, it elevates some workers above others, and creates a deep division within an industry that now, more than ever, needs to join together to meet ambitious environmental goals. As we have since the beginning of this debate, America’s 9,400 international nameplate dealers ask members of Congress and President Biden to stop playing politics with car sales and start working for all Americans – not just those who pay union dues.”
