Don't let Washington tell your customers what kind of car to buy.
The U.S. House of Representatives Ways & Means Committee has included a provision in the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package which would authorize up to a $12,500 tax credit for EVs, but $4,500 would be contingent on the vehicle being built by the United Auto Workers (UAW). This discriminatory and un-American proposal is an attack on the international nameplate auto industry and its 673,000 American employees.
There is no time to waste. The House of Representatives is expected to complete its work on the legislation within the next few weeks. Dealers and their employees must contact legislators and urge them to REJECT discriminatory EV tax credits that have nothing to do with the environment, and everything to do with politics.
Background
During a summer White House event that featured representatives of the Detroit automakers and the United Auto Workers (UAW), President Joe Biden announced a goal that 50% of cars sold in the U.S. be electric by 2030. Since then, the Democratically-controlled Congress has looked for ways to encourage this goal via legislative means.
Instead of working with the entire U.S. auto industry and applying new EV tax credits to all EVs in order to encourage their broad adoption, Democratic leadership has instead sought to use them as a way to unfairly advantage only UAW-built EVs, playing politics with what should be a shared effort. The budget reconciliation process has provided an opportunity for Democrats to pass legislation without any Republican votes, and is chock full of Democratic priorities, including a $4,500 tax credit excusively for union-built EVs.
If passed, the legislation would use American taxpayer dollars to disadvantage the 673,000 Americans who are directly employed by international nameplate manufacturers and dealerships.
