What got you into the auto retail business in the first place?
I came from Norway as a journalist. One of my assignments was as U.S. correspondent for the Automotive Department of a men’s magazine. I took a job at a dealership in Minneapolis to write about it and eventually bought the company.
When did you buy your first dealership?
1970.
In your tenure as an auto dealer, what is the one accomplishment for which you are most proud?
The successful behind-the-scenes negotiations in Japan to help settle the 1995 sanctions battle during my term as AIADA Chairman.
What makes a great auto dealer?
An entreprenurial spirit, a dedication to excellence, and a healthy portion of intestinal fortitude.
How are you active in the community?
Three decades of community leadership in health and education and service for the last seven years as Honorary Consul for Tanzania.
Who was the biggest influence in your career?
The late Oscar Borton, who started me in the automobile business.
What is the best part of your job?
Working with a truly outstanding team of professional men and women and serving an amazing group of clients.
